Establishment Process (1995–2008)

The institutional foundations of vocational higher education in Iğdır were established in 1995 with the founding of Iğdır Vocational School under Kafkas University. During the subsequent years, the school's academic and administrative structure was progressively developed. Within this framework, under the directorship of Lecturer Turgut Öcal, who served from 1995 to 2009, the number of academic staff increased to approximately twenty, and the fundamental academic infrastructure of the vocational school was established.

Iğdır University Period (2008–2013)

In 2008, Iğdır University was established through Additional Article 100 of Law No. 2809 on the Organization of Higher Education Institutions, and Iğdır Vocational School continued its operations within the framework of the newly established university. With the establishment of the University, the academic and administrative organization was restructured, and efforts to enhance vocational education in a manner that would more effectively address regional needs gained considerable momentum. During this period, under the leadership of Assistant Professor Nurullah Karta, who served as Director from 2009 to 2011, the number of academic staff increased to approximately thirty, marking a significant stage in the institution's academic and organizational development.

During the tenure of Assistant Professor Tuncay Kaya, who served as Director from 2011 to 2013, the number of academic staff increased to approximately thirty-five, reflecting a significant stage in the institution's academic development. In response to the growing need for specialization and the increasing demand for a qualified workforce in technical fields, the Vocational School of Technical Sciences was established in 2013 by a decision of the University Senate. It was separated from Iğdır Vocational School and gained the status of an independent academic unit. As part of this institutional restructuring, fifteen academic staff members specializing in technical disciplines formed the core of the newly established vocational school's academic faculty.

Development Period (2013–2025)

Following the establishment of the Vocational School of Technical Sciences, Assistant Professor Sefa Altıkat served as Director between 2013 and 2016. During his tenure, the number of academic staff decreased from 15 to 13, while the number of administrative staff increased to four. Student enrollment also experienced fluctuations during this period. The number of newly enrolled students declined from 197 in 2013 to 155 in 2016.

In 2016, Assistant Professor Mustafa Öcal was appointed as Director, serving in this position until 2025. During his tenure, the Vocational School entered a period of more pronounced institutional growth and development. Although student enrollment experienced a temporary decline in 2017 and 2018, the introduction of new academic programs in 2019 led to a significant increase in enrollment, with the number of newly registered students reaching 265. In the same year, the number of academic staff increased to 39, while the number of administrative staff was recorded as two. In the following years, student enrollment showed a steady upward trend, and by 2025, the number of newly enrolled students had reached 490, reflecting the institution's continued expansion and increasing educational capacity.

In 2025, the term of office of Professor Mehmet Hakkı Alma as Rector of Iğdır University came to an end, and Professor Ekrem Gürel assumed office as the new Rector of the University. During the same period, Professor Haktan Sevinç was appointed Director of the Vocational School of Technical Sciences on 11 June 2025. However, following his subsequent appointment as Vice Rector, a new administrative appointment became necessary. Accordingly, on 13 November 2025, Professor Aliihsan Şekertekin was appointed Director of the Vocational School of Technical Sciences. He assumed office with responsibility for 42 academic staff, 3 administrative staff, and 1,346 students, and continues to serve in this position. These administrative changes have contributed to maintaining institutional continuity and ensuring the sustainability of effective academic and administrative governance.

The Present

At present, the Vocational School of Technical Sciences has significantly enhanced its academic, administrative, and physical capacity through the structural transformations it has undergone since its establishment. The continuous increase in the number of academic staff has directly contributed to improving the quality of education and training. Through the expansion of academic programs, the strengthening of its educational infrastructure, and the effective promotion of university–industry collaboration, the Vocational School continues to fulfill its mission of educating a highly qualified workforce. Today, it operates as a dynamic academic institution that contributes to regional development while maintaining a strong commitment to continuous improvement and academic excellence.
