Our Vocational School Director, Prof. Dr. Aliihsan ŞEKERTEKİN, Met with Science Enthusiasts at the “Science in a Café” Event

As part of the “Science at the Café” event—organized by TÜBİTAK Bilim Genç with the support of our university’s National Technology Workshop—Prof. Dr. Aliihsan Şekertekin, Director of the Vocational School of Technical Sciences and a faculty member in the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, met with science enthusiasts to deliver a presentation titled “From Space to Earth: Discovering the Unseen.”

At an event held in Iğdır, Prof. Dr. Aliihsan Şekertekin provided participants with comprehensive information on the development of remote sensing technologies, the applications of satellite systems, and the innovations offered by artificial intelligence-powered satellite imagery analysis.

Applications of Remote Sensing Technologies in Daily Life Were Discussed

In his presentation, ŞEKERTEKİN provided examples of current scientific research in the field of remote sensing and the applications of satellite technologies across various disciplines, touching upon topics such as urban and regional planning, the monitoring of changes in land use and land cover, the support of agricultural production, and the assessment of natural disasters.

He explained, with examples, the capabilities provided by remote sensing technologies—particularly in agricultural applications—for tasks such as determining irrigation needs, planning fertilization processes, monitoring plant health, and increasing agricultural productivity through the use of satellite imagery.

Furthermore, addressing how satellite data can be utilized before and after natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and forest fires, ŞEKERTEKİN shared insights on the application of these technologies in areas including disaster risk assessment, damage detection, the monitoring of environmental changes, and defense.

The Importance of Remote Sensing Studies for Iğdır Province Was Emphasized

One of the significant parts of the presentation focused on remote sensing applications for the province of Iğdır. Prof. Dr. Aliihsan ŞEKERTEKİN discussed both the work already conducted in and around Iğdır and potential research topics that could be explored in the future.

Taking into account Iğdır’s agricultural potential, land-use characteristics, and environmental conditions, the focus was placed on the contributions that satellite technologies can offer in areas such as monitoring agricultural lands, managing water resources, assessing urbanization processes, and identifying the risks of natural disasters.

Strong Interest from Science Enthusiasts

The event, which aims to bring scientific knowledge to society and introduce current technologies to a broad audience, was attended by our university’s Vice-Rectors Prof. Dr. Uğur Şimşek and Prof. Dr. Haktan Sevinç, as well as faculty members, students, and science enthusiasts.

The program, during which participants' questions regarding remote sensing, satellite technologies, and artificial intelligence applications were answered, concluded with a commemorative photo session following the Q&A segment.
